Frequently asked questions

As well as providing reassurance in the early stages of pregnancy, there are several other reasons why you may choose to have an early scan. The following are common indications that can be easily checked with ultrasound:

Bleeding or spotting
Cramping or pain in the lower abdomen and pelvis
Previous history of miscarriage
Previous history of ectopic pregnancy
Unsure of dates

During the scan, the following basic checks will be confirmed for you:

Whether it is a single or multiple pregnancies
The presence of a heartbeat
Measurements of the pregnancy sac or foetus to give you an indication of how many weeks pregnant you are

Following the scan, you will be provided with the following to take home with you:

A full obstetric report including gestational age and estimated due date
Three black and white thermal ultrasound pictures (optional extra prints available on request)
Short complimentary video clip of baby’s heartbeat sent directly to your mobile

Early pregnancy scans between 8 and 14 weeks are usually carried out ‘transabdominally’, by scanning over your tummy.

Where the pregnancy sac and embryo will be smaller between 6 and 8 weeks, we may suggest an internal scan (with your consent) which would provide us with a much clearer image.

We do take a non-refundable deposit of £25 upon booking. In the case that you need to amend your booking, please call our team on 01753 358123 and we would be happy to assist you in changing your appointment.

Ultimately, the wellbeing of yourself and your baby is our highest priority.

For this reason, if any problem were identified during your scan, you would be informed by your Sonographer so that you can be checked at your next midwife/ hospital appointment. With your permission, we would contact your midwife/ GP on your behalf, to refer you on to them.

It’s useful to come for a full bladder so that we can get the best possible view of your baby. Please otherwise eat and drink as normal. It can also be a good idea to bring a chocolate bar or something sugary to have if baby is not in a favourable position on the day!

We usually welcome family and friends to appointments, and allow up to four extra people (excluding yourself and your partner) as it’s a lovely experience to share; however, please see our Coronavirus Preventative Measures on the main website for further up to date information on this.
